Bringing the Indoors Out – Outdoor Living by Archadeck

The recent trend in outdoor living design, such as porches, features movement toward bringing the comfort of the indoors outside.

This may seem like a new concept as you flip through the pages of the hottest outdoor living magazine or surf through the home improvement channels, but the concept has been around quite sometime. The goal has traditionally been to “bring the outdoors in,” but in recent years homeowners have begun focusing on reversing this and “bringing the indoors out” by carrying the indoor comforts into the natural beauty of our backyards.   A custom backyard retreat serves to extend the outdoor season, adds living space to the home and creates a versatile yet casual space for entertaining. This is what Archadeck is known for, and has been since 1991 throughout Greensboro, Winston Salem, High Point, and the surrounding areas.

Here at Archadeck, we are seeing clients request these type of outdoor living spaces like never before. It’s no wonder you’re itching to transform your old-school patio or cookie-cutter deck into an impressive and functional space. However the space alone will not result in the creature comforts for creating the ideal “bring the indoors outside type of space.” Start by looking at trends that fit your lifestyle and have the potential of making the space irresistible; an area that becomes a destination rather than just a space.

  • Optimal outdoor room placement

Good planning and placement of the structure will help turn your addition into a successful project. Where should your structure be placed? A good design is one where the structure complements your backyard.

3-season room Winston Salem
Winston Salem 3-season room provides a great multi-season outdoor room

If you’re lucky and have a fantastic view, you could take advantage of it! Perhaps you want your space to make the most of a shady spot or a sunny southern exposure. Is privacy from neighbors a concern? Are you close to a busy street where noise a problem? If so and if your area is limited, think about the use of landscape materials, partitions or fences to address the problem.

  • Making the outdoor living connection

Will your addition be connected to your home? If so, are you taking into consideration its proximity to the family room? A path through a family room could be an issue if foot traffic will soil your carpets and disrupt anyone watching TV or conversing. As an alternative, placing the structure adjacent to, or with easy access to, your kitchen will make it easy to move food and dishes back and forth when dining in your new outdoor living space.

  • Understanding scale between your home and outdoor living space

How will your new outdoor living space be used? If your home is small and you don’t anticipate entertaining a large number of guests at any one time, you probably won’t need a huge addition. Your plan for an outdoor living addition, such as a porch, needs to strike a balance between your home’s size, size of your household and functional requirements of the space you’re trying to satisfy.

  • Have a seat!

Tops in the comfort category are seating clusters. Thick, comfy cushions and strategically placed outdoor furniture arrangements can spark conversation and help build relationships with family and friends. Designers are big on outdoor furniture that brings people together, stands up to the elements and showcases personal style.

  • Go with the flow

It is important to have a good notion of how visitors will flow onto, within, and back out of your addition in relation to your home and backyard. Think about how family members, guests, and pets will be walking from the entrance of the residence to the backyard, from

the garage to the kitchen area, from the greenhouse or tool shed to the garden and so on.If you are likely to want a space solely for relaxation, you really don’t want all the visitors coming out of the property to merge into this area. Again, getting this right is a hallmark of good design.

If you are planning an outdoor living space and aren’t 100% sure what you want, it’s important to start asking yourself some questions, like how are you going to use the space? What views are important to you?  Archadeck of the Piedmont Triad can help guide your thinking and prepare you for your  dream outdoor project.  And, as always, feel free to contact us.

Avoid the sharks; build a Winston Salem deck!

Some folks are rethinking their annual beach trip in favor of watching Shark Week from the comfort of their new Winston Salem deck, porch, or patio.

Why build a Winston Salem deck in lieu of a beach vacation? Little did the producers of Discovery Channel’s Shark Week know, but their 2015 homage to the scariest denizens of the deep would coincide with one of the most active shark attack periods in the history of the Carolina coast. Whether you believe that the sharks are targeting humans or that they are just are having trouble distinguishing between people and bait fish, it has been a scary season for vacationers at the North Carolina shore.

Benefits of a Staycation on a New Winston Salem Deck Design

Sun and sand can be a wonderful way to spend your summer holiday, but we tend to forget some of the downsides. Rental of an oceanfront home for a week at the NC coast can easily set you back thousands of dollars. Sand gets on everything, slathering on sun screen gets old, and if you are leery of sharks, you might not feel comfortable venturing out into the surf. This year has also been unusually rainy which really prohibits outdoor fun.

Choose Archadeck, experienced deck builders in Winston Salem NC, to create a backyard worthy of a staycation!

Here are some more great reasons to add a new Winston Salem AZEK deck or porch this summer and head for your beach vacation next summer.

Firstly, you can use your new outdoor living space to make memories for years to come, not just for one week. You would be making an investment in your home that would increase the value in the way you live there, and perhaps to future buyers. Instead of spending time in a place decorated to someone else’s taste, you would have the opportunity to create a custom deck that is designed especially for you.

Invest in your own staycation outdoor retreat with Archadeck of the Piedmont Triad.

Additionally, if a storm rolls in and you are sitting on your covered deck or Winston Salem screened porch, you can revel in the majesty and the power of nature from the comfort of your dry, safe space. When it pours rain at the beach, we often feel frustrated and cheated. Watching Shark Week pairs well with popcorn when viewed from the comfort and safety of your new Winston Salem or Greensboro deck.

Choose Archadeck to build your dream deck design.

This year, don’t pack up the suitcases, groceries, and board games to haul to the beach. Stay in place and invest the money you would otherwise spend on gas, food, lodging, and meals out in a new outdoor living design that will make you happier at home.

Reclaiming wasted space – porch screening is the key

Arbor Run Oak Ridge NC screen area screen ezeWhen we arrived at this customer’s home in the Arbor Run section of Oak Ridge, we were a little at a loss as to what project they could have in mind. The home is gorgeous and they already had an expansive second story deck and shaded paver patio. What more could they want? Our clients conceived a seemingly small improvement that would give their home a terrific upgrade without spending a whole lot of money. They asked us to screen in the area underneath the existing deck to give themselves a nontraditional kind of screened porch. It may very well be the only one of its kind in the area.

We created one wall with a sweeping white arch across the top and a door and windows beneath. It has clean, elegant lines and lets in the maximum amount of light possible. The arch mimics the one on the rear of the home on the upper level, achieving design harmony– it looks like it was part of the original construction. There are smaller screens in the floor-to-ceiling window areas flanking each side.

This project was made possible by the fact that the deck on the upper level was built with a flooring system that keeps the area underneath dry. This kind of below decking ceiling system may also be retrofitted, but it is easier and less expensive to include it in original construction. Water diverters under the floor catch rain and send it to gutters and downspouts.

Screen Eze screened area Oak Ridge NCThe Screen-Eze® system that we used was ideal for this project. The screens are durable enough that they can cover up to 150 square feet, which is up to 3 times the normal area that can reliably be covered. It has a 10-year warranty and is famous for its ability to stretch and bounce back into shape rather than tear. This makes it the perfect screening solution for families with young children or pets. Bouncing off is always preferable to breaking through when it comes to screens.

Now the family has lots more usable, dry, bug-free space to enjoy. It’s a room that bridges the gap between inside and outside. It includes protection from the sun, the rain, and the insects that can make outdoor living a bit of a trial sometimes, but still provides plenty of opportunity to enjoy the fresh air and view of the backyard. Best of all, they are now making wonderful use of a space that was largely wasted before.

If pollen is your enemy, Eze-Breeze is your ally

Winston Salem NC sunroom Eze Breeze windowsThere is no prettier time of year in the Piedmont Triad area than spring. Perhaps it is the surge of optimism and excitement that comes with the end of winter, but the explosion of blooms on the ground and in the trees is certainly a huge part of it. Whether you love the fragile cherry blossoms, the fragrant lilacs or the sunshine of the daffodils, there is something for everyone to love about spring…unless you are allergic to pollen.

We visited a customer in Lewisville last month to give her an estimate on re-screening her existing porch with a pony wall. At the time that she called for her free consultation on her Piedmont Triad screened porch, she had never seen the Eze-Breeze window. We talked with her about how she uses her outdoor living space and she told us that she generally loves the porch, but that she always dreaded pollen season, both because of her allergies and because of the huge, hard-to-clean mess it creates.

Lewisville NC Eze Breeze vinyl window sunroomThe Eze-Breeze window option by Archadeck Piedmont Triad was a revelation for her. By converting her existing porch to a 3-4 season room, she has created a completely different space. The pony wall is gone, so she has light and visibility from floor to ceiling. The windows really open up the porch and make it much more airy. The glass panels with white vinyl trim are easily raised or lowered on one side of the room or all of them. She can control how much breeze blows through on any given day. If the air is cold or choked with gritty, yellow pollen, the windows stay closed and she turns on the new ceiling fan.

It’s still early days, so our client really hasn’t been able to experience the best part of the Piedmont Triad Eze-Breeze room. In years past the room was really only usable for about 5 months out of the year. Pollen and cold kept her inside the rest of the time. Now she can enjoy the beauty of the spring blooms without the watery eyes and the sneezes and she doesn’t have to scrub to clean the grit out of her all-weather wicker furniture. This season is the beginning of a whole new outdoor life for this homeowner.
