Bringing the Indoors Out – Outdoor Living by Archadeck

The recent trend in outdoor living design, such as porches, features movement toward bringing the comfort of the indoors outside.

This may seem like a new concept as you flip through the pages of the hottest outdoor living magazine or surf through the home improvement channels, but the concept has been around quite sometime. The goal has traditionally been to “bring the outdoors in,” but in recent years homeowners have begun focusing on reversing this and “bringing the indoors out” by carrying the indoor comforts into the natural beauty of our backyards.   A custom backyard retreat serves to extend the outdoor season, adds living space to the home and creates a versatile yet casual space for entertaining. This is what Archadeck is known for, and has been since 1991 throughout Greensboro, Winston Salem, High Point, and the surrounding areas.

Here at Archadeck, we are seeing clients request these type of outdoor living spaces like never before. It’s no wonder you’re itching to transform your old-school patio or cookie-cutter deck into an impressive and functional space. However the space alone will not result in the creature comforts for creating the ideal “bring the indoors outside type of space.” Start by looking at trends that fit your lifestyle and have the potential of making the space irresistible; an area that becomes a destination rather than just a space.

  • Optimal outdoor room placement

Good planning and placement of the structure will help turn your addition into a successful project. Where should your structure be placed? A good design is one where the structure complements your backyard.

3-season room Winston Salem
Winston Salem 3-season room provides a great multi-season outdoor room

If you’re lucky and have a fantastic view, you could take advantage of it! Perhaps you want your space to make the most of a shady spot or a sunny southern exposure. Is privacy from neighbors a concern? Are you close to a busy street where noise a problem? If so and if your area is limited, think about the use of landscape materials, partitions or fences to address the problem.

  • Making the outdoor living connection

Will your addition be connected to your home? If so, are you taking into consideration its proximity to the family room? A path through a family room could be an issue if foot traffic will soil your carpets and disrupt anyone watching TV or conversing. As an alternative, placing the structure adjacent to, or with easy access to, your kitchen will make it easy to move food and dishes back and forth when dining in your new outdoor living space.

  • Understanding scale between your home and outdoor living space

How will your new outdoor living space be used? If your home is small and you don’t anticipate entertaining a large number of guests at any one time, you probably won’t need a huge addition. Your plan for an outdoor living addition, such as a porch, needs to strike a balance between your home’s size, size of your household and functional requirements of the space you’re trying to satisfy.

  • Have a seat!

Tops in the comfort category are seating clusters. Thick, comfy cushions and strategically placed outdoor furniture arrangements can spark conversation and help build relationships with family and friends. Designers are big on outdoor furniture that brings people together, stands up to the elements and showcases personal style.

  • Go with the flow

It is important to have a good notion of how visitors will flow onto, within, and back out of your addition in relation to your home and backyard. Think about how family members, guests, and pets will be walking from the entrance of the residence to the backyard, from

the garage to the kitchen area, from the greenhouse or tool shed to the garden and so on.If you are likely to want a space solely for relaxation, you really don’t want all the visitors coming out of the property to merge into this area. Again, getting this right is a hallmark of good design.

If you are planning an outdoor living space and aren’t 100% sure what you want, it’s important to start asking yourself some questions, like how are you going to use the space? What views are important to you?  Archadeck of the Piedmont Triad can help guide your thinking and prepare you for your  dream outdoor project.  And, as always, feel free to contact us.

3-Season Window Systems Aid in Keeping the Mosquitoes Out

3-season rooms with vinyl-glazed windows can help us enjoy the better parts of spring and summer outdoor living.

When the warm weather returns each year, we Southerners go through a sort of emotional roller coaster ride. The welcome song of birds, the sight of butterflies flitting around over flowers, the hum of lawn mowers, and the tantalizing aromas of summer barbeques fill the air with a cheerful smile and make the cold, rainy winter seem like a long-distant memory. Suddenly summer heats up and you find yourself dripping with perspiration,  gnats buzzing around your face, and mosquitoes biting your ankles.  With the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses, folks want to be safe as possible from mosquito bites. It is certainly wise to be mindful. Using strong, 10-mil vinyl glazing for the enclosure windows provides all the benefits of glass without the high cost, heavy weight, or fragility. The vinyl can be tinted to a variety of heat and light-reducing shades, including dark gray and bronze. Additionally, the vinyl has a memory, meaning if it is unintentionally pushed or distorted, it will return to its original shape.

3-season window systems ventilate from the top or the bottom, allowing three-quarters of the window area to open with the screens in place when you desire maximum outdoor air. They close effortlessly to keep inclement weather where it belongs – outside. When the Spring and Summer months arrive, tinted vinyl-glazed panels can help to reduce solar heat gain. Sunroom or Screened Porch? Why Not Have Both?

Deciding which outdoor room is right for you could seem difficult, but Archadeck of the Piedmont Triad can help.

From, decks and patios to sunrooms and screened porches, each has its own benefits. You must weigh what is most important for your new outdoor project. Is it shape and size? Choice building materials? Your budget? All these questions will be addressed during your outdoor living design consultation. Archadeck of the Piedmont Triad will be with you every step of the way.

A 3-season room could be right for you.

Clients often wonder if building a screen porch or a sunroom is better. Both sunrooms and screened in porches are great outdoor living options. Each can add value to your home, and to the way you enjoy your home. When you work with Archadeck of the Piedmont Triad, you can have both a screen porch and a sunroom.

Our 3-season rooms are equal parts screen porch and sunroom.

Our clients love sunrooms as they can use them all year round while still being surrounded by the outdoors. Those with screened porches love to sit in the shade and feel the breeze without being bothered by bugs. Many of our clients choose to have the best of both worlds by way of a custom three-season room design.

Summerfield 3-season room design by Archadeck of the Piedmont Triad

How can a three-season room satisfy your requirements?

Your screen porch can include 4-track vinyl windows, which will convert your screened porch into a sunroom when closed. They can be opened to about 75% of the height of your screens, which means plenty of fresh air will flow through on hot summer days. When the weather cools or rain moves in, they can be fully closed to provide protection against the elements. Many of our 3-season room clients choose to add features, such as an outdoor fireplace and comfortable furnishings, which help their outdoor room feel even cozier.

3-season sunroom with two-way outdoor fireplace in Summerfield NC

These windows are custom-tailored for your project. Additionally, they are super clear and lightweight, which makes them easier to slide than glass, while maintaining the clear view that glass would provide.

If you still want a full sunroom, we design and build those too.

If you still prefer a sunroom with glass windows Archadeck of the Piedmont Triad is here for you. With a full sunroom, you will have a climate-controlled space that is usable all year long, just like an interior room. Sunrooms add actual square footage to your home, as well, which might be important to consider before you build. If you need more interior space, a sunroom can provide it.

If you are planning an outdoor living space and aren’t sure what you want, Archadeck of the Piedmont Triad’s experience Design Consultants can help. Get in touch with us for your complimentary outdoor living design consultation today.

Avoid the sharks; build a Winston Salem deck!

Some folks are rethinking their annual beach trip in favor of watching Shark Week from the comfort of their new Winston Salem deck, porch, or patio.

Why build a Winston Salem deck in lieu of a beach vacation? Little did the producers of Discovery Channel’s Shark Week know, but their 2015 homage to the scariest denizens of the deep would coincide with one of the most active shark attack periods in the history of the Carolina coast. Whether you believe that the sharks are targeting humans or that they are just are having trouble distinguishing between people and bait fish, it has been a scary season for vacationers at the North Carolina shore.

Benefits of a Staycation on a New Winston Salem Deck Design

Sun and sand can be a wonderful way to spend your summer holiday, but we tend to forget some of the downsides. Rental of an oceanfront home for a week at the NC coast can easily set you back thousands of dollars. Sand gets on everything, slathering on sun screen gets old, and if you are leery of sharks, you might not feel comfortable venturing out into the surf. This year has also been unusually rainy which really prohibits outdoor fun.

Imagine using would-be vacation funds to create your own stay-at-home Archadeck outdoor retreat? This beautiful Winston Salem deck design features not only full-sun spaces, but also has a covered area, where you can watch TV in the shade – sans sand!

Choose Archadeck, experienced deck builders in Winston Salem NC, to create a backyard worthy of a staycation!

Here are some more great reasons to add a new Winston Salem AZEK deck or porch this summer and head for your beach vacation next summer.

Firstly, you can use your new outdoor living space to make memories for years to come, not just for one week. You would be making an investment in your home that would increase the value in the way you live there, and perhaps to future buyers. Instead of spending time in a place decorated to someone else’s taste, you would have the opportunity to create a custom deck that is designed especially for you.

Invest in your own staycation outdoor retreat with Archadeck of the Piedmont Triad.

Additionally, if a storm rolls in and you are sitting on your covered deck or Winston Salem screened porch, you can revel in the majesty and the power of nature from the comfort of your dry, safe space. When it pours rain at the beach, we often feel frustrated and cheated. Watching Shark Week pairs well with popcorn when viewed from the comfort and safety of your new Winston Salem or Greensboro deck.

Choose Archadeck to build your dream deck design.

This year, don’t pack up the suitcases, groceries, and board games to haul to the beach. Stay in place and invest the money you would otherwise spend on gas, food, lodging, and meals out in a new outdoor living design that will make you happier at home.

It’s a wrap! Consider vinyl column wrapping for a great low maintenance option.

pergola with vinyl wrapped columnsWhen looking for low maintenance building materials for a Winston Salem screened porch or a Greensboro deck, most people stop after going over the benefits of wood vs. composite materials like TimberTech or AZEK. For some architectural elements of a porch, pergola or gazebo there is a third choice: wrapping pressure-treated pine with vinyl. It’s a clever, cost-efficient way to take advantage of most of the best features of both options.

The primary reason that many customers decide to use pressure-treated timber is that it is inexpensive. It has an additional benefit in that it’s very strong.

Wrapping wood posts and columns with vinyl lets you capture all of the benefits of low maintenance for those large, highly visible elements of your open or screened porch at a significantly reduced cost. Take a look at the combination stone and wrapped columns on retractable pergola sun shade Winston Salemthis project we recently completed. They are the most visible part of the portico. It’s really important that they stay looking great and the composite wrap will ensure that they will for years to come.

I’d like to point out one other wonderful design detail on this project. Take a look at the retractable fabric shade installed across the ceiling. It makes this space so dynamic. Changing from open to closed, from sun to shade is almost as easy and using a set of mini-blinds inside your home. Don’t you just want to grab a drink and have a seat?

Building season is in full swing in the Winston Salem area. Reclaiming wasted space – porch screening is the key

Arbor Run Oak Ridge NC screen area screen ezeWhen we arrived at this customer’s home in the Arbor Run section of Oak Ridge, we were a little at a loss as to what project they could have in mind. The home is gorgeous and they already had an expansive second story deck and shaded paver patio. What more could they want? Our clients conceived a seemingly small improvement that would give their home a terrific upgrade without spending a whole lot of money. They asked us to screen in the area underneath the existing deck to give themselves a nontraditional kind of screened porch. It may very well be the only one of its kind in the area.

We created one wall with a sweeping white arch across the top and a door and windows beneath. It has clean, elegant lines and lets in the maximum amount of light possible. The arch mimics the one on the rear of the home on the upper level, achieving design harmony– it looks like it was part of the original construction. There are smaller screens in the floor-to-ceiling window areas flanking each side.

This project was made possible by the fact that the deck on the upper level was built with a flooring system that keeps the area underneath dry. This kind of below decking ceiling system may also be retrofitted, but it is easier and less expensive to include it in original construction. Water diverters under the floor catch rain and send it to gutters and downspouts.

Screen Eze screened area Oak Ridge NCThe Screen-Eze® system that we used was ideal for this project. The screens are durable enough that they can cover up to 150 square feet, which is up to 3 times the normal area that can reliably be covered. It has a 10-year warranty and is famous for its ability to stretch and bounce back into shape rather than tear. This makes it the perfect screening solution for families with young children or pets. Bouncing off is always preferable to breaking through when it comes to screens.

Now the family has lots more usable, dry, bug-free space to enjoy. It’s a room that bridges the gap between inside and outside. It includes protection from the sun, the rain, and the insects that can make outdoor living a bit of a trial sometimes, but still provides plenty of opportunity to enjoy the fresh air and view of the backyard. Best of all, they are now making wonderful use of a space that was largely wasted before.

A Picture Perfect Winston Salem Pergola Covered Deck

Looking for ways to create a show-stopping deck design? Consider a Winston Salem pergola covered deck.

Some people derive outdoor living inspiration from home improvement or DIY TV shows. Others look to magazines like Southern Living or Home and Garden. Sometimes the spark for a new project comes from visiting the homes of friends and neighbors. In this scenario, we usually don’t want to copy every detail, but rather personalize elements to fit our own preferences.

Archadeck’s Winston Salem Pergola Designs Elicit Outdoor Living Inspiration for Friends and Neighbors.

These homeowners wished to upgrade their Winston Salem deck by rebuilding anew and adding protection from the elements to boot. They had great ideas about how their deck could better accommodate their outdoor lifestyle. Archadeck Piedmont Triad worked closely with them to design and implement a finished Winston Salem deck project that is a wonderful twist on the pergola concept that you don’t see in every back yard.

What’s different about this Winston Salem deck and pergola?

This Winston Salem deck offers the feeling of a covered porch.

This custom pergola is topped with a polycarbonate roof which offers the fabulous combination of filtered sunlight, with some UV protection, and almost total protection from the rain. The cover also made it easy for us to install a tropical-inspired ceiling fan. This pressure Winston Salem deck design also features a small open area for grilling or sunning that leads to bench steps on one side. The pergola is attached to the home on the back side, and supported with decorative Doric columns on the opposite side. Pergolas originate from the Mediterranean region, so columns chosen from the same architectural background create aesthetic harmony.

Black, powder-coated aluminum deck railings along the perimeter maintain the feeling of openness in the space. The rails harmonize nicely with the lawn furniture the couple selected for their relaxation space and the rails provide a clear line-of-sight into the luxurious green lawn behind the house. A second bench stair step offers additional access to the back yard.

If pollen is your enemy, Eze-Breeze is your ally

Winston Salem NC sunroom Eze Breeze windowsThere is no prettier time of year in the Piedmont Triad area than spring. Perhaps it is the surge of optimism and excitement that comes with the end of winter, but the explosion of blooms on the ground and in the trees is certainly a huge part of it. Whether you love the fragile cherry blossoms, the fragrant lilacs or the sunshine of the daffodils, there is something for everyone to love about spring…unless you are allergic to pollen.

We visited a customer in Lewisville last month to give her an estimate on re-screening her existing porch with a pony wall. At the time that she called for her free consultation on her Piedmont Triad screened porch, she had never seen the Eze-Breeze window. We talked with her about how she uses her outdoor living space and she told us that she generally loves the porch, but that she always dreaded pollen season, both because of her allergies and because of the huge, hard-to-clean mess it creates.

Lewisville NC Eze Breeze vinyl window sunroomThe Eze-Breeze window option by Archadeck Piedmont Triad was a revelation for her. By converting her existing porch to a 3-4 season room, she has created a completely different space. The pony wall is gone, so she has light and visibility from floor to ceiling. The windows really open up the porch and make it much more airy. The glass panels with white vinyl trim are easily raised or lowered on one side of the room or all of them. She can control how much breeze blows through on any given day. If the air is cold or choked with gritty, yellow pollen, the windows stay closed and she turns on the new ceiling fan.

It’s still early days, so our client really hasn’t been able to experience the best part of the Piedmont Triad Eze-Breeze room. In years past the room was really only usable for about 5 months out of the year. Pollen and cold kept her inside the rest of the time. Now she can enjoy the beauty of the spring blooms without the watery eyes and the sneezes and she doesn’t have to scrub to clean the grit out of her all-weather wicker furniture. This season is the beginning of a whole new outdoor life for this homeowner.

Greensboro Deck Construction Upgrade

This Greensboro deck construction project is anything but standard. Trusted Greensboro NC deck builders set the bar high for this family!

deck builders Greensboro NC

If you have a deck that you like, but wish to make it a deck that you love, Archadeck of the Piedmont Triad can help. That was the case with these Greensboro deck clients. They had an existing outdoor living space that provided years of enjoyment.

The outdoor area was one of the things that attracted them to the home when they purchased. They imagined enjoying the serene backyard with it’s beautiful wooded perimeter. Even though they had a walkway and covered deck, they envisioned even better use of this private outdoor space. They asked neighbors and friends if they could recommend a company to help them achieve their vision.

Archadeck were the recommended deck builders in Greensboro for this project!

At the recommendation of some neighbors, they gave us a call for a complimentary consultation. We visited their home to assess the existing deck and walkway structures for safety and function. We then began our conversations with the clients about their vision for the upgraded space. Afterwards, our custom design team created this dynamic wrap-around Greensboro deck.

A Greensboro Deck and Then Some

We didn’t simply offer a new and better deck design to fulfill these clients’ outdoor living needs, but we also gave them a new outdoor storage space beneath the deck. This allows for convenient storage with protection from the elements. We added solid vertical board skirting to obscure their stored items too!

Greensboro deck construction project by Archadeck

This Greensboro deck construction upgrade is a functional win up top too!

These Greensboro deck clients enjoy watching the ever-changing population of birds migrating through the area. The hummingbird feeder was one of the first things to go up on the new porch. Next to that area, sit two rocking chairs for bird-watching, reading, or an early morning coffee – rain or shine.

A lighted deck railing will aid these homeowners and their guests after dark!

There are two types of dark – urban/suburban and country. This property is “country dark.” With little to no light pollution, nighttime hours here can be inky black. These clients and their guests can move freely about the new outdoor space with the aid of lighted post caps. These deck lights are easily controlled with the flip of a switch, or they can be placed on a timer to illuminate on a set schedule.

Covered deck in Greensboro NC by Archadeck of the Piedmont Triad

No design detail was lost on Archadeck.

Architectural details provide a beautiful aesthetic to the open area where the family will spend most of their time. This veritable observation deck features a diagonal decking installation that meets at a center parting board, so there are no end-to-end board connections. The low-profile black deck railing infill does not obstruct the view out into the beautiful backyard expanse. We tied the new deck design in with the existing home through the white vinyl column wrap and the white railing frame and posts. The black stone wraps add an air of sophistication and visual interest in contrast to the stark white elements. The deck connects the home to its natural surroundings seamlessly – and beautifully!

Outdoor Living: Winston Salem 3-Season Room and Deck in Summerfield Subdivision

Which outdoor living space will best suit you? Maybe one space will not do. Archadeck can help you choose the best outdoor living spaces for your needs.

Making the decision to add an outdoor living space is a big one and there are many considerations that come into play. What type structure do you want? How large should it be? What building materials should you use? There are some questions that are even more important. These include:

  1. How do you intend to use your new outdoor living space?
  2. If you want more than one space, should you build it all at once, or in phases?
Pressure-treated wood deck Winston Salem Summerfield

An experienced Winston Salem deck builder will guide you through each decision.

Many of our clients wonder whether a deck or a porch will better suit their needs. Some are weighting decks against patios. Questions about structure types and materials should be the last questions on your list. Ask yourself if you’d like to eat outside. If so, how often? Do you want to do a lot of grilling? Do you plan on curling up with a good book quite regularly in your new space? How much do you like direct sunlight? Sun is great but oftentimes, clients wish for at least some protection from our North Carolina sun.

You can wish for more than one use, more than one outdoor living space – and with Archadeck, you can achieve it.

In the questions above, you probably answered yes to most of them. You want to eat outside. You want to relax outside. You want direct sun. But sometimes, you don’t want direct sun. This is very common. That’s why Archadeck of the Piedmont Triad builds custom outdoor living combination spaces. These might include a porch and open-air deck or patio.

Should you build all your outdoor living spaces at once, or in phases?

For some clients, it makes sense to build one or two spaces immediately and add more later. However, in the spirit of saving money in the long run, it is wise to create a harmonious design of multiple outdoor spaces, and build them all at once. This not only means savings overall, but it is also more convenient to get all the building completed at once. This means you won’t be tearing up your yard or interrupting your life next year or the year after to add on to your outdoor living design. It also ensures that all your materials age harmoniously.

This was the sensible option for these Winston Salem clients. Their new outdoor living space includes a 3-season room and deck. These spaces combined, accommodated all their outdoor living requirements.
